Women’s History month

Creating illustrations for a Splunk employee resource group.

Type of project: Illustration

background

Even though my job title has the word “designer” in it, every UX designer knows this reality: that on-the-job opportunities for creative, boundless visual design, are few and far between.  I had a special opportunity to exercise some of my dormant graphic design creativity with this project; needless to say, I jumped at it.

In celebration of Women’s History Month 2020, the Womxn+ Employee Resource Group at Splunk hosted a series of programs around our global offices that celebrated women’s global accomplishments throughout history, and also highlighted the inspirational figures we have within our Splunk community.

As a member of the Women’s History Month Content workstream, I worked with 4 Splunkers to create a historical timeline that highlights important, formative events and experiences for women.  We selected ~60 events to feature, spanning from the rise of one of the first woman medical practitioners in 400BC, to celebrating modern day marriage equality.  To make these stories come to life, I built a visual timeline and supplemented some events with illustrations of the figures involved.

We had the posters printed and allowed people to engage with the timeline in person in various Splunk office locations, and also distributed stickers of my illustrations.

Timeline created using Adobe Illustrator. Illustrations created using Procreate on iPad Pro with Apple Pencil.
